Convite
In Oaxaca, people meet, gather, invite and celebrate around a Convite: at births, baptisms, marriages, anniversaries, birthdays, bridal requests, “mayordomía”, communal work, parades and festivities such as Guelaguetza, Day of the Dead, Christmas and New Year.
Convite Mezcal, Espadin Esencial, Joven, Mexico
This benchmark bottling from our proud Oaxacan friends at Convite is a supremely welcoming invitation to explore their wares. The great strength of the Espadín variety of agave is its purity of flavour. Here, we see it shining bright. Juicy, sappy, aloe-vera-like notes of agave permeate the nose, palate and finish, with subtle Mezcal smokiness and a cream soda sweetness. Sip it or mix it: this is a welcome guest at any party.
Convite Mezcal, Espadin Madcruishe Blend, Joven, Mexico
To let the agave varieties express themselves, the team at Convite use ambient yeast and no additives in their production. This Joven style is a 50-50 blend of Espadín and the wild Madrecuishe varieties. There’s a serious, smoky dried herb punch to the nose, not unlike good peated Islay whiskies. Earthiness and camphor on the palate are lifted by sweet lemon oil and a minty freshness. The finish is cigar and spice, making this an easy crossover point for whisky fans.
Convite Mezcal, Tobala, Joven, Mexico
Wild Tobala agave needs a whopping 12 years in the ground before it can be harvested to produce mezcal. This beautiful Mexican spirit opens with lime blossom, aloe vera, young pine and Greek yoghurt aromas. The complex and smoky palate is reminiscent of fine Islay whisky. There’s earthy smoke, green chilli warmth and the creamy, smooth texture common to all Convite mezcal. The finish is long and powerful, with leafy greenness, a hint of charcoal and wispy smoke. Enjoy this neat as the locals do, or lightly chilled.
San Baltazar Guelavila
Convite mezcal is made in the Zapotec mountains of San Baltazar Guelavila, District of Tiacolula, located in the Sierra Madre del Sur. It is a magical place, with amazing biological diversity, surrounded by mountains, stony waterfalls and springs at 1900 meters above sea level.
San Baltazar Guelavila is particularly fertile where different types of wild agaves grow naturally. The best and largest mezcal agaves in the world come from this area.
